Super Mario Bros.: The Movie 2 will feature some new characters beyond those we've already met, and, according to Keegan-Michael Key, the voice actor of Toad, the Mario series' sprawling backstory will be delved into even more in the upcoming sequel. "One thing I can say about the second movie is that it's much broader in scope and where it takes place is very interesting to me," Kay said in an interview. "They're going to find some really great Easter eggs, and it's very exciting so far." "I feel like what they've done creatively is really broaden the universe that these characters live in, and we're going to meet some new characters. We're going to meet some new characters that are both old fan favorites, and some characters that I think are very obscure, but because of the way the story is unfolding so far, they're going to be very fascinating," Kay added. It seems unlikely that the character Key was referring to was extremely obscure. That being said, the actor has shown an impressive knowledge of some of the series he's been a part of, so it's not impossible that Key has extensive knowledge of Mario's backstory. Regardless, his comments have sparked a lot of speculation about which characters he could be referring to. Fans' speculation on these "unpopular characters" ranges from well-known characters like Rogeta, Kinoye, and Toad Piccolo, all the way to lesser-known characters who only appeared once like Titanga and the notorious New York contractor Anthony Scarpelli. "Super Mario Bros. The Movie 2" is set to be released on April 3, 2026. |
