Mel Gibson to direct Lethal Weapon 5, fulfilling Richard Donner's last wish

"Lethal Weapon 5" has finally made progress. Recently, Mel Gibson said in an exclusive interview with foreign media "Variety" that he will direct this belated sequel to fulfill the original director Richard Donner's last wish.

Richard Donner's wife Lauren Donner and Dan Lin (Godzilla vs. Kong) served as producers, and the screenwriter of The Equalizer, Richard Wenk, wrote the latest version of the script. Warner is responsible for distribution, and the release date has not yet been determined.

The Lethal Weapon series began in 1987 and is Mel Gibson's Hollywood masterpiece. It is also a representative work of the police partner film genre. It tells the story of Martin Riggs, a policeman played by Mel Gibson, and Roger Mataf (played by Danny Glover), a black policeman waiting to retire, who teamed up to solve the case. Three sequels were released in 1989, 1992 and 1998 respectively. Jet Li also starred in Lethal Weapon 4.

Mel Gibson told foreign media: "Donald spent a long time developing the script and put in a lot of effort. One day he came to me and said, 'Boy, if I die, you will continue to do it.' I said: 'Don't say these unlucky things. Later he really died (July 2020). He did entrust the project to me, but I hadn't agreed at that time. He told his wife, the film company and the producer about it, so I decided to direct the fifth episode."
