According to Variety, Amazon Prime Video is developing a "RoboCop" series, with Peter Ocko ("Black Sails", "The Office") as the creative lead and James Wan as the executive producer. Amazon MGM Studios has appointed Peter Ocko as writer, executive producer and showrunner for the Robocop series. In addition, James Wan, the famous producer and director of the Saw, The Conjuring and Insidious series, will serve as producer through his Atomic Monster. Variety also released the show's plot synopsis: "A giant technology company teams up with a local police department to combat rising crime with a technologically advanced law enforcer - a cop who is part human, part machine." This plot synopsis doesn't stray too far from the general premise of the original 1987 Paul Verhoeven-directed film, which starred Peter Weller as a half-man, half-machine law enforcer. While the film received mixed reviews upon its release, it has since received a critical reappraisal, earning its place in sci-fi film history and '80s cinema. It was also a commercial success, earning $53.4 million worldwide, and kicked off a franchise that has spawned two sequels, a 2014 remake, several television series, several video games, and more. |
