"Player" has a box office of over $100 million and has been the box office champion for two consecutive weeks

"Player" has topped the box office for the second consecutive week, and its global total box office has exceeded $100 million.

"Player" was released in foreign theaters on August 13, and the film earned $51 million in the first week, of which $28.4 million came from North America. The film continued its initial strong momentum in the second week, and "Player" topped the charts for the second consecutive week.

The film grossed $18.8 million in North America in its second weekend. That’s a drop of nearly $10 million between the first and second weeks, but that’s a very good sign, according to people familiar with the matter. This is called a “second-week hold,” and typically the drop is in the 50% to 60% range. But the fact that “Player” only dropped by a third suggests it could have a bright future.

“We don’t often see a 34% decline like this, especially during a pandemic,” explained Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore. In fact, over the past year, Playerun had the best second-weekend performance of any movie that grossed over $10 million. While cinemas have been closed multiple times during this time, this still means it performed better than blockbuster films like Black Widow, Suicide Squad, and Tenet.

The success of the second week means that "Player" has grossed more than $100 million worldwide, with a total of $112 million so far. This is an excellent result for a brand new IP, and perhaps a sign that more studios will begin to move towards theatrical-only releases. Warner Bros. has previously committed to releasing all of its movies simultaneously on HBO Max in 2021.

The early success of Gamer was apparently enough to warrant a sequel, further proving that video game movies can now be good movies, even though Liberty City isn't really a game.
