Foreign media: Hollywood box office in China continues to be sluggish, and only 13 films have been introduced to the mainland

According to relevant statistics from foreign media, Hollywood's box office performance in China continues to be sluggish. As of July 31, revenue from Hollywood imported films was only US$700 million, a 66% decrease from the same period in 2019 (US$2.1 billion) and a 61% decrease from the same period in 2018 (US$1.8 billion).

Chinese domestic films performed well overall during the epidemic. At the beginning of the year, "Hello, Li Huanying" earned $822.1 million, and the recent "Chinese Doctor" earned $197 million. As of the end of July, the box office of domestic films in mainland China totaled $3.9 billion, higher than the box office of $3.8 billion in the same period of 2018 and $2.9 billion in 2019. However, due to the absence of many Hollywood imported films, the total box office of movies in mainland China in the first seven months was lower than the same period in 2019, from $5.5 billion to $4.7 billion.

Analysts say the biggest problem is the lack of imported films. Few Hollywood films were released globally in the first half of the year due to the pandemic. In addition, China's film regulators have been more stringent than ever this year. So far, only 13 Hollywood co-productions have been released in mainland China, down from 22 in the same period of 2019 and 26 in 2018.

The most recent Hollywood film to be released in China was Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway Plan (box office: $30.7 million) on June 11, followed by Sunny Days, which will be released this Friday. Blockbusters such as Black Widow, Jungle Cruise, Off the Beaten Track, Space Jam 2, The Suicide Squad, and Shang-Chi, which will be released in September, currently have no plans to be released in China.
