■ Story

One day, an object from space fell to Earth. Six beams of light were scattered all over the world from the object, and a girl wandering near the site of the impact was picked up by Saionji. 17 years later, the "Mechanical Empire Galfa," which plans to annihilate all of humanity in the universe, begins its invasion of Earth, and Galfa's fortress, "Spiral Castle," appears in lunar orbit. "Machine beasts" launch from the Spiral Castle and attack cities around the world, one of which attacks Hoshimi Town. On that day, Kusanagi Hokuto, a boy who had just moved to Hoshimi Town, met Izumo Ginga, a boy who would become his classmate. The two were chased by Galfa's mechanical beasts and took refuge there, where they encountered a giant robot, "Dendoh," and were chosen to be its pilot. The two became members of the anti-Galfa Earth defense organization, "Gear," and although they sometimes clashed, they cooperated to control Dendoh and fight against Galfa's mechanical beasts and pilots. Ginga and Hokuto have grown up through various experiences, including a fight with Altea, the brother of Hokuto's mother, Orie; his friendship with the sacred electronic beasts "Data Weapons" that become Dendoh's weapons; the battle between Hokuto and Ginga, who have been brainwashed by Galfa; and an encounter with Subaru, the son of Emperor Galfa. Eventually, Ginga and Hokuto reach Planet Arctos, the home planet of the mechanical empire Galfa. Dendo struggles against the overwhelming force of the enemy and Emperor Galfa's infinitely regenerating half, "Zero," but the seventh and final data weapon, "Phoenix Yell," appears. Borrowing the power of the Phoenix, Dendo challenges the final battle to defeat Emperor Galfa.

■ Main Characters

・He is a fifth-grader at Izumo Ginga Hoshimi Elementary School, and is an active boy who prefers to act rather than think. When Galfa attacked Earth, he was chosen along with Hokuto to pilot Dendoh, and was entrusted with the blue Gear Commander. At first, he was arrogant about being chosen by Dendoh, and underestimated the battle with Galfa. However, as he experienced defeat and setbacks, he grew and awakened to his mission to protect Earth. He often clashed with Hokuto, but gradually they came to respect each other. He is impulsive and has a strong competitive spirit. He is also reckless and prone to getting carried away. He sometimes loses sight of himself and gets lost, but when he makes up his mind, he is more capable of acting than anyone else. He is also always honest with his feelings, and his frank attitude often saves those around him. He is not good at studying, but is generally good at sports. In particular, he learned martial arts from his mother Midori from a young age, and used those skills to pilot Dendoh.
・Kusanagi Hokuto A fifth-grader at Hoshimi Elementary School, he is an intelligent boy who is both thoughtful and decisive. On the day he moved to Hoshimi Town with his family, he witnessed the Galfa attack. He was chosen to pilot Dendoh along with Ginga, and was entrusted with the Black Gear Commander. Although he was confused about the fact that he was carrying the fate of the Earth on his shoulders, he became more aware of his role as Dendoh's pilot after witnessing the Earth's crisis. Although he sometimes disagreed with Ginga, who has a completely opposite personality, they gradually built a relationship of trust. He is calm and cautious, but also has a proactive side. He also has excellent understanding and judgment, and often leads Ginga in battles. Due to his gentle personality and friendly nature, he is popular with both boys and girls in his class. He is good at math and science, and is also knowledgeable about computers and other machines. He likes soccer and billiards.
・Vega (Kusanagi Orie)
She is the vice commander of the Earth Defense Organization GEAR, and was originally scheduled to be Dendoh's pilot. She is an advisor for battle command, and supports Dendoh's battles on the front lines herself. She is also an expert in hand-to-hand combat, using a variety of special weapons, and is skilled enough to fight on equal terms with the Black Knight Altea. She is one of the people deeply involved in the founding of GEAR, and has extensive knowledge about Dendoh, data weapons, and Galfa. Her costume is made from materials that utilize the latest technology. She is actually Hokuto's mother, Orie Kusanagi, in disguise, and is the princess of the Arktos royal family. When she is on duty as the vice commander of GEAR, she goes by her real name, Vega. Her secret is only known to a handful of top executives within GEAR, including Director Shibuya.
・A pilot of the Knight Ouga with a white Gear Commander, dispatched from Galfa Home Planet to capture the Altea Data Weapon. He is the head of the guard of Emperor Galfa, with the title of Black Knight, and his rank is the same as that of Spiral Castle. He has outstanding fighting skills and has caused Dendoh a lot of trouble. His true identity is Vega's long-lost brother, the prince of the Arctos royal family. Emperor Galfa, who considered Ouga a threat, had his original memories sealed away, but he reunited with his sister Vega in episode 4, and his memories began to unravel when he confronted her directly in episode 11, and he was temporarily returned to Galfa Home Planet and had his memories manipulated. After that, he returned to Earth to search for the seventh Data Weapon, but was nearly killed by Spiral Castle and the three Kikaku, who had developed a deep hatred for him. Although he managed to survive and regain his memories, he was seriously injured and entrusted Ouga to Hokuto. After his wounds healed, he participated in the final battle with Galfa Home Planet as Meteor's battle commander. When Dendo confronted Emperor Galfa, he used the Ohga to face off against Zero. He has a calm and collected personality, and is strong-willed, willing to risk his life for his mission.
Ellis Willamette
A genius girl who graduated from MIT at the age of 10. With a PhD in electronic engineering, she was the youngest person ever to be scouted by GEAR. Initially, she was researching data weapons at GEAR's US branch, but was promoted to the head of data weapon analysis and transferred to the Japan headquarters. After coming to Japan, she transferred to class 5-1 at Hoshimi Elementary School to keep an eye on Ginga and the others. Although she has a strong and competitive personality, she also has a gentle side. Although she often argues with Ginga, who is also competitive, they support each other in times of crisis and strongly back up Dendo. Her hobby is bass fishing, because "the uncertainty of dealing with nature is the greatest attraction."
Emperor Galfa A mechanical lifeform that reigns supreme over the mechanical empire Galfa. He seeks to eliminate humanity from all planets and become the king of the universe himself, and sends his Spiral Castle to Earth as a vanguard. He is ruthless in treating his subordinates like disposable pawns and mercilessly executing (eliminating) those who fail. In reality, it was a network system that once managed the ecology of the planet Arktos, and was a collection of seven computer programs. However, while simulating the transition of the ecosystem, it derived the calculation result that humanity would destroy the planet. Then, believing that the only way to create stability was for him, a machine, to rule the universe, he drove Arktos to collapse. After that, he continued to go out of control, annihilating life in other star systems one after another. At the same time, he was searching for the whereabouts of the Data Weapon, following the legend of Arktos that was left in his memory, which said, "He who obtains all the sacred beasts of electrons will become the king of the universe."
Subaru is the prince of the Galfa Empire and the son of Emperor Galfa. Just like Altea, he is qualified to use the Ohga. After the Spiral Castle's invasion of Earth failed, he was tasked with searching for the seventh data weapon and visited Earth with Zero. He regards Altea as his older brother and hates Hokuto, the Ohga pilot who stole him away. However, as he communicates with the brainwashed Hokuto, he realizes that he has begun to feel emotions such as joy and loneliness, and becomes confused. Subaru is the grown-up version of a baby Galfa found during the collapse of Planet Arctos, and these memories were imprinted on him by Emperor Galfa, who was looking for a spare Ohga pilot. Due to his upbringing, Subaru has difficulty communicating with others, but he is actually a kind boy who loves flowers and plants.
Chief Shibuya is the head of the Earth Defense Organization, Gear. He is one of the few top executives within Gear who knows the true identity of Vega, the princess of the Arctos royal family.
Kira Kunishin: A member of the Earth Defense Organization, Gear. He supports Ginga and Hokuto as they fight with Dendo. He also pilots the Cell Fighter, a battery-replacement machine developed by Gear in the UK.

Rating and Recommendation for GEAR Senshi Dendoh

"GEAR Warrior Dendoh" is a robot anime produced by Sunrise that aired from 2000 to 2001, and its unique worldview, attractive characters, and epic storyline have attracted many fans. This anime depicts the growth and friendship of boys who fight to protect the Earth, while also depicting universal themes such as courage, trust, and hope through the fierce battles with the mechanical empire Galfa.

Story and Themes

The story of "GEAR Warrior Dendoh" begins on an epic scale, with an object from outer space falling to Earth and 17 years later, the mechanical empire Galfa launches an invasion of Earth. The protagonists, Hokuto Kusanagi and Ginga Izumo, are chosen by chance to pilot the giant robot "Dendoh" and fight against Galfa as members of the Earth defense organization "Gear." While centering on the boys' growth and friendship, the story also depicts a variety of themes through battles for the fate of the Earth, family secrets, and conversations with enemies.

Particularly impressive is the presence of Emperor Galfa and his background. Emperor Galfa is a network system that once controlled the ecology of the planet Arctos, and based on the results of his own calculations, he has come to the conclusion that humanity will destroy the planet, and now seeks to rule the universe through machines. This setting makes one ponder deeply about the progress of science and technology and its ethical issues, giving the work a depth that goes beyond a simple conflict between good and evil. Furthermore, through characters such as Altea and Subaru, the importance of dialogue and understanding with the enemy is also depicted, and the story feels deep as a human drama rather than just a simple battle scene.

character

The characters in "GEAR Warriors Dendoh" are all unique and attractive. The main characters, Hokuto and Ginga, have contrasting personalities, but they support each other and grow together. Hokuto is a calm and intelligent boy, while Ginga is a boy full of energy and courage. Their growth and friendship leave a strong impression on the viewer. Characters such as Vega (Kusanagi Orie) and Altea also play an important role in adding depth to the story. Vega is Hokuto's mother, and is depicted fighting to defend the Earth despite her secret that she is the princess of the Arktos royal family. Altea is the captain of Galfa's guard, but also holds a complicated position as Vega's older brother, and his conflicts and growth are not to be missed.

Sub-characters such as Ellis Willamette and Subaru also play important roles in enriching the story. Although Ellis is a genius girl, she is depicted fighting alongside Ginga and the others, and although Subaru is the son of Emperor Galfa, he is depicted confronting his own emotions. The diversity and depth of these characters makes "GEAR Warrior Dendoh" an even more fascinating work.

Mechanics and battles

The mechanical design of "GEAR Warrior Dendoh" shines with the quality that is unique to Sunrise. Giant robots such as Dendoh and Ohga are characterized by their unique design, which generates combat power by rotating cylindrical turbines. In addition, the sacred electronic beasts known as data weapons each have different attributes and symbols, creating a variety of battle scenes. Data weapons such as the Unicorn Drill, Viper Whip, Leo Circle, Bull Horn, Dragon Flare, Gatling Boar, and Phoenix Ale appear as the story progresses and are important elements that increase Dendoh's combat power.

Highlights of the battle scenes include the showdown between Dendo and Ohga, and the fight using data weapons. In particular, Dendo's special move, the "Final Attack," is activated when Hokuto and Ginga's hearts become one, symbolizing the boys' growth and friendship. The final battle with the appearance of Phoenix Yell is sure to captivate viewers as the climax of the story.

Music and voice acting

The music for "GEAR FIGHTER DENDO" was composed by talented composers such as Toshihiko Sahashi and Subaru Asami, and is an important element in adding excitement to the epic story. The opening theme "W-Infinity" features the impressive, powerful vocals of Mieno Hitomi with Kageyama Hironobu, and symbolizes the theme of the story. The ending themes "COUNT DOWN" and "Brand New Mermaid" also feature beautiful melodies that match each scene. Additionally, the insert songs "NanuRizuma," "HEART DRIVE," "Over the Rainbow," and "FINAL ATTACK" also play an important role in stirring emotions as the story progresses.

The voice actors are also impressive, with Yoko Matsuoka as Izumo Ginga, Naomi Shindo as Kusanagi Hokuto, Kotono Mitsuishi as Vega, Kazuhiro Nakata as Altea, and Kenichi Suzumura as Subaru, all of whom exude the individuality of their characters. In particular, the dialogue between Yoko Matsuoka and Naomi Shindo leaves a strong impression on viewers, as they portray the friendship and growth of the boys in a realistic way.

Recommendation

"GEAR Senshi Dendo" is a recommended work not only for robot anime fans, but also for viewers who want to enjoy a story about the growth and friendship of boys. The epic storyline, charming characters, and the high-quality mechanic design unique to Sunrise will attract viewers. In addition, the music and voice actors' performances are also important elements that will liven up the story, making it a highly complete work overall.

In particular, we recommend this to viewers such as:

  • People who like robot anime
  • People who like stories about the growth and friendship of boys
  • Those who want to enjoy the epic storyline
  • People who like Sunrise works
  • People who are particular about music and voice actors' acting

"GEAR Senshi Dendo" is a work that conveys universal themes of courage, trust and hope to viewers, as well as entertaining stories on a grand scale and fascinating characters. Be sure to watch it for yourself.
