■ Story

Shinjuku East Side... In the center of this extremely chaotic city, Kabukicho spreads out with its twinkling neon lights. The brighter the light, the darker the shadow. Deep in the darkness where the bad guys lurk, the lights of the detective tenement are on. Mrs. Padson runs the tenement, and it is full of eccentric characters. There is an ambitious detective, a sister detective who tricks men, a failed detective, an old man detective, an old man detective who was expelled from the yakuza... and the master is the genius detective Sherlock Holmes who loves Rakugo. On the night of the bizarre murder committed by Jack the Ripper, the curtain rises on the play. The detectives' deception is the weft, and the friendship between Sherlock, Watson, and Moriarty is the warp... Mystery? Or comedy? The beginning of an indistinguishable drama.

■ Main Characters

Detective Sherlock Holmes One of the members of the detective agency at the Tenement House. He is extremely intelligent, but also a natural eccentric, using all five senses to gather information. He also has tastes far beyond those of ordinary people. He loves Rakugo, and when solving mysteries, he performs his own "mystery rakugo."

John H. Watson is a forensic pathologist at the University Hospital in West, and a common-sense person with no particular characteristics. One day, disturbing events began to occur around him, and he fled across the wall to East. In order to return to a peaceful life, he visits the Detective Tenement and tries to ask Sherlock for help, but...

Detective James Moriarty A high school student who often comes to hang out at the tenement house. At first glance, he seems like a cheeky boy, but in fact he has deductive abilities that rival Sherlock's, and is the only person he gets along with. He also has a cute side, finding and picking four-leaf clovers for his younger sister. He is the captain of a guerrilla unit formed by the children of Kabukicho.

A member of the Detective Tenement. He has escaped the East and is trying to make his way in the West, using his detective work as a foothold. His current target is the serial killer known as "Jack the Ripper." He is a germaphobe and always wears gloves. He is head over heels in love with Maki, a regular customer at the Pipe Cat, but because he is shy, their relationship is not progressing.

Mary Mornstan: Lucy's younger sister. She is skilled at reading men's minds, and is a little devil who manipulates those around her. She also has Lucy under her control. She is a light-hearted gal, but she is surprisingly calm in assessing things. She is the polar opposite of Lucy, and is a strategist, and they work as a detective agency, making the most of their teamwork.

Lucy Mornstang is a member of the Detective Tenement and teams up with her sister Mary. Although she may appear cool at first glance, she is a warm-hearted person with a straightforward personality. Her hobby is watching sumo wrestling. She dotes on Mary and will not hesitate to put herself in danger if it's for her. Originally from a fishing town in Aomori, she ended up at the Detective Tenement several years ago. She's a person of action who acts before she thinks.

・Michelle Belmont A member of the Detective Tenement, and a former detective at East Precinct. At the time, he was Detective Lestrade's superior, but he was fired for misconduct and abandoned by his wife and children. He has a cunning personality and solves cases by making full use of his connections with police and the yakuza. He is a gambling addict who frequents boat races, pachinko parlors, and casinos.

・Torataro Kobayashi A member of the Detective Tenement. Born and raised in Kabukicho, he is a former yakuza. He has a tough, intimidating face, but is also honest and charming. His deductive skills are not so good, but he runs a detective business, taking advantage of his location and his ability to act. He accepts requests regardless of size, and sometimes works part-time at Pipecat to make ends meet.

Mrs. Hudson is the leader of Kabukicho and the gay owner of the Detective Tenement (not yet constructed). She is also the owner and manager of Pipe Cat. She has a loving personality and dotes on the children who hang out in Kabukicho. She has a beautiful voice and often shows it off at Pipe Cat shows.

Pipe A huge male ragdoll (renovated) kept by Mrs. Hudson. He lives with Pipecat, but due to his whimsical personality, he wanders around Kabukicho freely, appearing unexpectedly. He rarely gets close to people other than Mrs. Hudson and the bartender, and considers all the detectives in the tenement house his servants.

・Masaya☆ He is the owner of the cabaret club "White Rose" in Kabukicho, and was previously the No. 1 host at the host club "Stud Farm". He loves to be in the spotlight, and is often the star of parties and events. He is familiar with the people at Dylan Tenement. Although Sherlock and Kyogoku always rudely reject him, he continues to approach them. Kobayashi is a regular customer.

・Bartender The bartender, a pipe cat. Always silent, few people have ever heard his voice. He is a good conversation partner for Mrs. Hudson, and the only person she can vent her frustrations to. Evaluation

"Kabukicho Sherlock" is an anime series that aired from October 2019 to March 2020, and is an original work produced by Production IG. This work depicts the exploits of detectives set in Kabukicho, centering on Sherlock Holmes. Below, we will explain in detail the appeal and features of this work.

Story and setting

"Kabukicho Sherlock" is set in Kabukicho, an east side district of Shinjuku Ward. This neon-lit town is a place where light and shadow intersect, with the detective tenement house at its center. A group of unique detectives gather at the detective tenement house, and the story depicts them solving various cases. Of particular note is the appearance of Sherlock Holmes as a genius detective who loves rakugo. His detective rakugo is an important element in livening up the mystery-solving scenes.

The story begins with a bizarre murder case committed by Jack the Ripper. This incident leads to the depiction of the friendship and conflict between Sherlock, Watson, and Moriarty. The story is an exquisite blend of mystery and comedy, and viewers will not tire of it. In addition, the individual episodes of the detectives are also fascinating, and the backgrounds and growth of each character are carefully depicted.

character

The greatest attraction of this work is its diverse characters. While Sherlock Holmes has a genius for deduction, his eccentric side is also emphasized. His use of his five senses to gather information and his extraordinary tastes give viewers a fresh surprise. In addition, his love of Rakugo (traditional Japanese storytelling) creates a unique character image that fuses traditional Japanese culture with Western detective novels.

John H. Watson is a common-sense man who works as a forensic pathologist, but he gets caught up in disturbing events happening around him and ends up visiting the detective tenement house. The depiction of Kabukicho from his perspective gives the viewer a realistic feel. James Moriarty is a character who, despite being a high school student, has deductive abilities comparable to Sherlock, and his love for his sister and his leadership as the captain of the guerrilla unit are also depicted.

Other than that, a variety of other characters appear, such as the ambitious Kyogoku Fuyuto, the sister detectives Mary and Lucy, the former detective Michelle Belmont, and the former yakuza Kobayashi Torataro. Their individual stories and relationships enrich the work as a whole.

Animation and performance

Production IG's animation realistically recreates the atmosphere of Kabukicho. Visual elements such as the neon lights, the hustle and bustle of the city, and the unique atmosphere of the detective tenement house enhance the story. Additionally, the work of character designer and chief animation director Toshiyuki Yahagi brings out the individuality of each character.

In terms of directing, Director Ai Yoshimura's skill shines through. She manages to keep the pace of each episode well balanced between mystery and comedy. Series composer Taku Kishimoto's storytelling is also superb, drawing viewers in with a story that will keep them hooked.

music

Music is also an important element in enhancing the appeal of this work. The opening theme "CAPTURE" is performed by EGO-WRAPPIN' and expresses the energetic atmosphere of Kabukicho. The ending theme is "Hyakuoku Kounen" by Lozalina for #01 to #12, and "Parade" by Ishizaki Huwie for #13 onwards, and each song adds to the atmosphere of the story. Additionally, the soundtrack by Iga Takuro also skillfully brings out the emotions of each scene.

Recommendation

"Kabukicho Sherlock" is a unique work that combines mystery and comedy. It depicts the famous character Sherlock Holmes from a new perspective, and you can enjoy the adventures of a cast of unique characters. It is especially recommended for those who like detective and mystery stories, and those who want to experience the atmosphere of Kabukicho. It is also full of elements that will be enjoyed by those who are interested in rakugo and Japanese culture.

This work not only provides viewers with new surprises and excitement, but also depicts a deep human drama. By following the growth of each character and the changes in relationships, viewers can become deeply immersed in the story. Please take a look at the detectives of Kabukicho.
