The Batman movie spin-off universe is officially named and more details revealed

Although HBO recently abandoned plans for an Arkham Asylum spinoff of The Batman, director Matt Reeves has big ambitions beyond his upcoming Penguin series starring Colin Farrel. Now, Reeves has revealed that his new multimedia shared universe is called the Batman Epic Crime Saga, and he has more potential spinoffs in mind.

“When we were writing the script for Batman, I was thinking, ‘I think there’s some really cool stuff we can do,’ ” he told Entertainment Weekly. “That’s actually why I wanted to do the deal with Warner Bros.” He also recalled that HBO executives told him, “We really like what you’re doing, and we want to be more fully invested in the character.”

A potential spinoff series was previously rumored to be set during Batman's first year as a hero and centered around a corrupt cop in the Gotham Police Department. Reeves told Entertainment Weekly that parts of the project have already been incorporated into the story of The Penguin. However, he has not yet decided which Batman-related character the next spinoff should focus on.

Producer Dylan Clark added: "We're also exploring another direction for the TV series. We're looking at the whole world related to who Batman is - the adversaries around him, all the crime that he has to deal with in the city - and trying to figure out the best areas to explore."

Reeves also said that The Penguin will be a bridge between the first Batman movie and the second movie, which is expected to be released in 2026. The Penguin will premiere on HBO and Max on September 19.
