Netflix released an average of one new original TV show or movie every day in 2019. According to Variety Insight, the streaming giant has launched 371 new TV shows and movies in the United States this year. This is a 54.6% increase from the 240 TV shows and movies released by Netflix in 2018. By comparison, this number exceeds the number of original TV shows released by the entire US TV industry in 2005. The genres included in this analysis are documentaries, adult animation, alternative TV shows (i.e., unscripted), comedies, dramas, news, and talk shows. This number also includes all movies released on Netflix, including 30 movies that had limited releases. Of the 371 movies, only a quarter were produced by Netflix in overseas markets. This achievement was also well reflected in the Golden Globe Awards, where Netflix received 34 nominations, a 2.6-fold increase from last year. Broadcasting networks did not receive a single nomination this year, indicating that Netflix is surpassing them in scale, and this is still the latter's own game in the traditional sense. Next year, Netflix will face more intense competition from HBO Max, Quibi, and Peacock, which will likely increase production again. Netflix's original film and television productions next year are likely to exceed 400. |
