Ethan Hawke: Logan is overrated, it's all about money

Ethan Hawke called Logan a "great superhero movie" but believes the genre is overrated.

After receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Locarno Film Festival, Ethan Hawke expressed his rational thoughts on the superhero movie genre; in particular, he believes that the idea that Hollywood studios now let audiences think that "superhero movies are great movies" is itself worthy of caution.

He said in an interview, "We all say that "Logan" is a great movie, then we have a problem. Yes, it is an excellent superhero movie. The actors come out in tights and metal objects come out of their hands. This is not Bresson, not Bergman. But the way people talk about it, it's as if it is the same."

"I went to see Logan because everyone was saying 'it's a great movie' and I was like 'really? No, it's a good superhero movie.' It's different, but the industry doesn't think it's different. The industry wants you to think it's a great movie because they want to make money off it."

At the same time, he also emphasized the significance of the existence of film festivals: "What kind of films should be seen? If we don't have these film festivals, the big industry will crush all these small films."

Ethan Hawke's new film, the musical biopic "Blaze", and the comedy "Juliet Naked" in which he starred are now being released in North America. His future new works include Hirokazu Koreeda's first French-language film "Catherine's Secret", the electrical inventor biopic "Tesla", and the western "Billy the Kid".
