The Kyoto Animation arson case was officially sentenced today, and the defendant Shinji Aoba was sentenced to death

According to NHK news today (January 25), the verdict of the Kyoto Animation arson case was announced today (January 25). The 45-year-old defendant Shinji Aoba was found guilty of murder and arson and was sentenced to death. The presiding judge said that Shinji Aoba was "not in a state of mental loss or mental exhaustion when committing the crime, and had the ability to judge right from wrong."

On the morning of July 18, 2019, Shinji Aoba, then 41, went to the first studio of Kyoto Animation (KyoAni) in Fushimi District, Kyoto City and set it on fire, killing 36 people and injuring 32 people to varying degrees. Shinji Aoba himself was also severely burned in the fire and was not formally arrested until May 2020.
