Captain Marvel 2: IGN scores 8 points, North American box office in the first weekend is the worst in the MCU

Although "Captain Marvel 2" won the North American box office championship last weekend, it also set the worst opening record for a Marvel movie in history, with a box office of only 47 million US dollars in the first weekend.

"Captain Marvel 2" is the 33rd film in the MCU, with overseas box office of 63.3 million US dollars. Combined with the North American box office of 47 million US dollars mentioned above, the total box office of "Captain Marvel 2" in its first weekend just exceeded 100 million US dollars (110.3 million US dollars).

In comparison, Captain Marvel 1 in 2019 grossed $153 million in North America in its first weekend, $302 million internationally, and $455 million in its first weekend. The final box office was $1.131 billion.

On Rotten Tomatoes, Captain Marvel 2 has a media approval rating of 62%, which is only better than Ant-Man 3 (46%) and Eternals (47%) in the entire MCU. However, the film's audience rating is very high, reaching 84%.

IGN gave Captain Marvel 2 an 8-point rating. IGN reviewer Amelia Emberwing said:

“Its depth is evident not only in the characters but in the story as it explores the complex consequences of war; the difficulties of being a human being when you are viewed as a giant being; and the interesting and complex virtues of family.

Nia DaCosta’s MCU debut is hilarious and heartfelt, and after the credits roll, you’ll be asking when she and her heroines are coming back. It’s a shame the villains don’t get to play much.”
