Cameron denies Titanic submarine movie rumours

Titanic director James Cameron has now gone on record to say that there is no truth to rumors that he will direct a project based on the OceanGate submarine disaster.

Earlier in July, British tabloid The Sun published a story titled “In-depth look at ‘Titanic’ director James Cameron in talks with major streaming platforms for doomed Titan submarine series.”

Cameron responded on Twitter: "I don't normally respond to offensive rumors in the media, but I must now. I will not and never will discuss the OceanGate movie."

In June, the first reports surfaced that a submarine with five passengers aboard had gone missing while visiting the wreck of the Titanic, thousands of feet below the surface. The submarine, called the Titan, was operated by OceanGate. A massive rescue operation ensued, but it was eventually discovered that the submarine had imploded less than two hours into the journey.

The submarine was carrying OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood, businessman Hamish Hardin and Titanic expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet. All five people died.

Cameron has given several interviews since the disaster to discuss it: In addition to his famous films, he is an experienced deep-sea diver who has visited the wreck of Titanic 33 times and has piloted the submarine he helped design and build alone to the Challenger Deep, the deepest known point on the ocean floor.

The director is currently working on Avatar 3, which has been postponed to 2025.
