Sonic 3 surpasses The Lion King at the box office; Disney accused of data fraud

While competition has always existed at the box office, when two big-budget movies hit theaters on the same weekend, audiences inevitably compare their performances, as was the case with Sonic 3 and The Lion King: The Legend of Mufasa, which opened simultaneously the week before Christmas.

Disney manipulated data in the opening weekend to try to hide the advantage of "Sonic 3". In the second week, Disney was accused of directly falsifying data and claiming that it was the box office champion. Although "The Lion King: The Legend of Mufasa" led the global box office, "Sonic 3" was the top in the US market.

After the second round of competition, Disney once again claimed that it was the champion in both the global and US markets. However, the community notes pointed out that there were doubts about the source of Disney's data.

In fact, after two weeks, Sonic 3's box office in the US market reached 138 million US dollars, while The Lion King: The Legend of Mufasa only had 113 million US dollars, still losing to Sonic 3. Disney has been trying to explain the data, but it has been refuted by community comments every time.

Whether Disney has a strange way of counting data or is simply falsifying it is unclear. It is better to focus on the global box office. The Lion King: The Legend of Mufasa is already leading the global market by a large margin. Disney should not be ashamed of this and should directly publicize this more convincing data.
