The Star Wars-themed hotel "Galaxy Star Cruiser" at Disney's Orlando Resort has announced that it will close after just over a year of operation. In the updated details on Disney's website, the company stated that the hotel will receive its last batch of guests from September 28 to 30, 2023. Disney said: "We are proud of all the cast members and Imagineers who brought 'Star Wars: Galactic Star Cruiser' to life and look forward to continuing to provide guests with outstanding experiences on the remaining cruises in the coming months. Thank you to our guests and fans for making this experience so special." The hotel was not open for long, first opening to regular guests in March 2022. It lasted only 19 months until it closed in September. The hotel is modeled after the Halcyon ship from Star Wars, with intricate decorations, interactive activities, themed dining and live entertainment. The full experience for two days costs $4,807 for two adults and $5,999 for three adults and one child. Not particularly "affordable". In addition to closing the hotel, Disney CEO Bob Iger also announced that the company had canceled plans to build a $1 billion theme park next to its Orlando resort. In an internal memo, Iger attributed the decision to "changing business conditions," but it may also be due to Disney's soured relationship with the state of Florida, where Orlando is located: Disney sued the state of Florida last week. The cancellation also means that 2,000 California employees no longer need to relocate, which had previously led to a strike by employees. |
