The game-adapted movie "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" has been officially released in American theaters and has received good reviews. Recently, the screenwriters of the film, Pat Casey and Josh Miller, admitted in an interview with foreign media "GamesRadar+" that they had planned to kill off Sonic's human friend Tom, played by James Marsden. Miller explained that they initially saw Tom's death as a way to raise the stakes and set Sonic on a path of revenge against Shadow. "We did talk about how we could raise the stakes," he explained. "We knew that we wanted the end of the movie to be that Sonic found himself just as angry and wanting revenge as Shadow did. So it was kind of like, what brought him to this point?" At one point the answer to this problem was the death of Tom’s character, but as Casey puts it, the team ultimately decided that wouldn’t work: “Ultimately we felt like, nobody really wants to see Tom die. We want people to be happy at the end of the movie, and I think that might be a little too much.” So in the movie "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" (the following contains spoilers), Tom was hit hard by Shat and was sent directly to the hospital, but he eventually survived with the company of his family. Casey added to this: "I mean, we were movie fans before we were screenwriters. I used to get really angry when characters were killed off unnecessarily, especially at the beginning of a sequel where they bring your favorite character from the previous movie and kill them off in the first scene. They do it to raise the 'stakes,' but all they really achieve is make me mad." |
