Gunn said that the purpose of filming "Guardians of the Galaxy 3" was to tell the story of Rocket Raccoon well.

Recently, James Gunn, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, said in an interview with the American film magazine Total Film that the reason he came back to complete the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy was none other than Rocket Raccoon. The focus of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will also shift to Rocket Raccoon.

James Gunn said: "The most important thing for me is Rocket's story - and then everyone else. Rocket is the secret protagonist of the Guardians of the Galaxy and has always been the center of this team for me. This is really satisfying. The reason I came back and decided to make this movie is because I really feel that Rocket's story needs to be told well - this was put on hold after 2. So this is the most important thing."

Gunn went on to say that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 can be both a standalone film and the end of a trilogy. The first Guardians of the Galaxy was about mothers, the second was about fathers, and the third film is about self, and that's the meaning of this journey.
