The director of Knives Out 2 strongly objected to the film being named as a sequel

Rian Johnson, director of the recently released Netflix crime mystery film "Knives Out 2", publicly discussed the making of the film and expressed his regret over the film's official title "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery Story".

Rian Johnson tried very hard to make the sequel to his 2019 hit Knives Out a standalone story rather than a sequel. He wanted the only thing in common between the two to be detective Benoit Blanc from the first film.

"I tried very hard to keep them separate. Honestly, I was annoyed that Knives Out was in the title," Johnson told The Atlantic. "I wish it was just The Glass Onion."

Johnson added: "I understand, and I hope that everyone who loved the first movie knows that this is the next movie in the series, but at the same time, the best thing about the series to me is that it's a brand new story every time. But the continuity is more appealing."

Rian Johnson also wrote and directed 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and despite being the second film in the trilogy, he tried to bring some closure to the franchise.

“With the Star Wars movies I did, I tried to give it a really great ending. I loved the ending so much that when I did the middle chapter of the trilogy, I tried to give it an ending as well,” he explains. “A good ending recontextualizes everything that’s come before and makes it a beautiful counterpoint in itself—that’s what makes a movie a movie. That’s becoming less and less true. This toxic idea of creating an IP has completely seeped into the foundation of the narrative. Everyone’s thinking, how can we squeeze more out of this?”
