Aquaman to star in Minecraft movie and voice the main character

Warner Bros.' troubled "Minecraft" movie is in talks with "Aquaman" star Jason Momoa to voice the protagonist, media outlet The Ankler reported.

Warner Bros.' copyright to Minecraft will reportedly end in January 2023, which means the Minecraft movie must begin production before that expires.

In addition to Jason Momoa, the film has apparently been directed by Jared Hess, who previously directed Napoleon: The Big Shot and The Mad Priest.

The report also pointed out that if the first "Minecraft" movie is successful, Warner is looking to turn the movie into a series. Recently, the "Sonic the Hedgehog" series has successfully proved that a video game adaptation movie can also be successful: both movies are hot-selling, the third one is on the way, and a spin-off live-action drama is also in development. Obviously, Warner Bros. hopes that "Minecraft" can continue the popularity of "Sonic the Hedgehog".

Minecraft's troubled development dates back almost a decade, when Night at the Museum director Shawn Levy left Warner Bros.' Minecraft project in 2014 over creative differences. Rob McElhenney, co-director of the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia TV series, took over, but McElhenney also left soon after.

When the Minecraft movie was in the script development stage in 2016, the producers said that the target audience of the movie was the same as that of Jurassic World.
