"House of Cards" producer and star's lawsuit ends, Spacey pays plaintiff $30 million

Recently, the lawsuit between MRC Productions and famous actor Kevin Spacey has officially ended. The lawsuit began in 2019. In November of this year, the court rejected the appeal filed by the defendant Kevin Spacey and officially ruled that actor Kevin Spacey and his film and television companies M. Profit Productions and Trigger Street Productions must pay MRC Productions US$29.5 million in compensation and US$1.4 million in legal fees.

It is reported that this case originated from the fact that Spacey was accused of sexual assault by many people since 2017, including a production assistant who accused him of molesting him. MRC launched an investigation and subsequently expelled him from the "House of Cards" crew and terminated his acting and production contracts.

The defendant Kevin Spacey appealed that the sexual harassment allegations against the actor during the filming of "House of Cards" could not be used as a reason to terminate the contract. Kevin also stated that MRC Productions fired him for business reasons.

Kevin Spacey's dismissal did affect the filming of the sixth season of "House of Cards". The two episodes of the original sixth season of "House of Cards" that had been filmed were also overturned and re-shot after the leading actor was fired. The script of the sixth season of "House of Cards" was rewritten, and the original 13 episodes were reduced to 8 episodes. These changes not only increased the filming cost of the sixth season of "House of Cards" but also reduced its expected revenue.
