Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis, the new film from The Godfather, had a lot of PR problems before its trailer was pulled because it featured fake AI-generated reviews, and now box office forecasts suggest it could open lower than the Borderlands live-action movie. According to Variety, Cosmopolis is expected to gross $5 million to $7 million in its opening weekend. By comparison, Borderlands opened to $8.6 million and grossed $32.9 million worldwide on a budget of $1.2 billion. Cosmopolis also reportedly grossed $120 million, but the key difference is that Coppola largely paid for it himself. The director had been trying to make the film for years but no major studio was willing to work with him, so he financed it himself. The film stars a stellar cast, including Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Laurence Fishburne, and Dustin Hoffman. Adam Driver plays an architect who can control space and time, and the film will revolve around the survival of a city called "New Rome" that is actually no different from New York. Earlier this year, a background actor on the set of Cosmopolitan accused the director of sexually harassing physical contact, and the director subsequently denied the allegations and sued the media outlet Variety over the matter. The film is scheduled to be released in the United States on September 27. |
