Netflix's Magic: The Gathering animated series was first announced in 2019, when it was reported that the Russo brothers would serve as executive producers of the show, but they voluntarily withdrew from the project in 2021 due to different visions. Later in 2021, it was reported that a new creative team had been formed, led by Transformers: Prime executive producer Jeff Kline. The show was announced to be released in the second half of 2022, but it mysteriously disappeared as several high-profile animated series projects were canceled that year. The last time we heard about the project was in 2023, when Hasbro's CEO confirmed during an earnings call that the show was still in production. But now it seems that the show has been completely abandoned. Although Netflix, Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast have not yet made any statements, the main voice actor Brandon Routh now claims that the show "will not happen". He confirmed the news to foreign media Collider. Brandon Routh was originally going to voice the protagonist Gideon Jura in the show. Brandon Routh said: "I'm not sure. I did voice it. As far as I know, no one has made news about it, but it's obviously not going to happen. This is old news. I don't know why it's coming up again." This isn't exactly surprising news - Netflix would be more than happy to cancel a show it didn't think had much promise - and it also wouldn't make much sense narratively since main character Gideon Jura has been dead for five years in the Magic lore. |
