The director wanted Frodo to kill Gollum and take back the ring at the end of The Lord of the Rings

However, director Peter Jackson recently revealed that in his previous idea of ​​the ending, Frodo did not push Gollum off Mount Doom.

In Peter Jackson's biography Peter Jackson: A Film-maker's Journey, another idea Peter Jackson had for Frodo in The Lord of the Rings was for him to kill Gollum in cold blood to retrieve the Ring.

The idea was that Frodo would be overcome by the charm of the Ring, and as they wrestled in the rubble of Mount Doom, Frodo would kill Gollum and get the Ring back. It turns out that this was more than just an idea, as Peter Jackson revealed that he actually filmed this version of the ending.

Peter Jackson recalled: "When we first shot this scene, Gollum bit off Frodo's finger and Frodo pushed Gollum off the platform into the lava below. It was a murder, but we didn't mind at the time because we felt that everyone wanted Frodo to kill Gollum."

But there was one extra scene that hadn't been released. Jackson and his team decided to shoot a different scene — the one that made it into the final cut — because the early ending was "very un-Tolkien-like," Jackson said. "It went completely against his vision of the hero," he said.
