'Stranger Things' star joins Sony's 'Gran Turismo' live-action movie

"Stranger Things" actor David Harbour (Hawkins Police Chief) has now signed a contract to join Sony's live-action "Gran Turismo" movie, which will be released in August 2023.

Sony describes the film as the "ultimate wish-fulfillment story of a teenage Gran Turismo player," who becomes a bona fide professional racing driver after his gaming skills win him a series of Nissan races.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Harbour will play a retired driver who teaches a teenager how to drive in Gran Turismo.

Neill Blomkamp (Chappie, Elysium, District 9) will direct the film from a script written by Jason Hall (American Sniper) and Zach Berlin (King Richard).

The film could be based on the GT Academy competition, which was run by Nissan and Sony between 2008 and 2016 and earned the winner a place in Nissan's driver development program.

One of the most notable real-life success stories from the GT Academy is British racing driver Jann Mardenborough, who won the championship in 2011 before going on to compete in the GP3 series, the 24 Hours of Le Mans and Japan's Super GT series.
