If you're a big fan of both Stranger Things and the game Monopoly, you might want to wait a little longer before buying the new Stranger Things -themed edition of the classic board game, as it contains some major plot spoilers for Stranger Things Season 4. According to The Hollywood Reporter , series creators Matt and Ross Duffer are not happy about it. Despite the Duffer brothers' heavy marketing efforts for their wildly successful Netflix series, the show is reportedly too big for them to see all of it at this point, and the game appears to have leaked, leaving the brothers "completely devastated." The toy and board game industries don't develop at the same pace as the film and television industries, and have been the source of spoilers more than once in recent years, frustrating creators and fans alike. THR notes that Jon Favreau was fiercely protective of Grogu, also known as Baby Yoda, from spoilers, resulting in toys related to the popular character appearing months after the show aired. The difference in cadence and inventory schedules was also mitigated during the pandemic, when toys related to the likes of Ghostbusters and Marvel Cinematic Universe movies arrived in stores months ahead of their films. A post on the Reddit forum says the owner of the leaked Stranger Things Monopoly purchased it "fair and square" from a "nationally recognized retailer," meaning it wasn't stolen from a shipping box or a test kit but purchased directly from the store. However, these details remain unconfirmed. Here’s Netflix’s official description for Stranger Things Season 4: “It’s been six months since an interstellar war brought terror and devastation to Hawkins. Reeling in the aftermath, our friends have been separated for the first time—and graduating from high school hasn’t made things any easier. During this most vulnerable time, a new and terrifying supernatural threat surfaces, presenting a terrifying mystery that, if solved, may finally end the horrors of the Upside Down.” |
