The new superhero film "Superman: Legacy" announced that the head of DC will personally direct it

Filmmaker and DC Studios co-head James Gunn will direct from his own script for Superman: Legacy, announcing the film on Twitter.

"It's been a long road to get to this point," Gunn said. "I was asked to direct Superman many years ago - I initially turned it down because I couldn't give Superman the respect he deserves and make it feel unique and interesting and emotional. Then less than a year ago, I had an idea that in many ways revolved around Superman's heritage - how his Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents gave him his identity, and the choices he makes. All in all, I loved the script, and I'm very excited that we're finally getting to start this journey."

The film was previously announced as part of the first chapter of the DCU (DC Cinematic Universe) - "Gods and Monsters", which will include the slate of DC movies and TV shows recently announced by James Gunn and Peter Safran.

When talking about the future plans for the DCU, Safran said: "This is the real prologue of the DCU. It will not be an origin story. It will focus on how Superman balances his Kryptonian tradition with his human upbringing. He is a symbol of truth, justice and American tradition. In a world that thinks kindness is outdated, he insists on his kindness."

When mentioning that the film will be released on July 11, 2025, Gunn said that when he told his brother Matt, Matt burst into tears. Although he had forgotten, July 11 is also his father's birthday.

Gunn said his father died three years ago. He said: "He was my best friend. He didn't understand me when I was a kid, but he supported my love of comics and my love of movies. If it weren't for him, I wouldn't be making this movie now."

Considering that Superman also lost his two fathers one after another and was deeply influenced by their ideas, I believe Director O'Neal will also bring his own feelings into the movie.
