Ant-Man 3 sets series record in North America, but box office in mainland China falls short of expectations

Although Ant-Man 3's Rotten Tomatoes rating is as low as 47% (tied with Eternals for the worst in the MCU), its North American box office was estimated at $104 million in three days over the first weekend (US$118 million in four days), setting a record for the highest opening in the Ant-Man series. Ant-Man opened at $57.22 million in 2015 and Ant-Man 2 opened at $75.81 million in 2018. Last weekend, Ant-Man 3 attracted 7 million people to North American theaters, twice as many as Uncharted in the same period last year.

Ant-Man 3 did not perform as well in the overseas market as in North America. Its opening weekend grossed $121 million, 13% ahead of Ant-Man during the same period, but 27% behind Ant-Man 2 during the same period. The overseas box office was not as good as expected mainly because of the Chinese mainland market. Ant-Man 3 only grossed 132 million yuan in the mainland, even less than the 154 million yuan on the first day of Ant-Man 2. Even so, Ant-Man 3's opening in the mainland was converted into US dollars to 19.2 million, which is still the highest in the overseas market. As of Sunday, Ant-Man 3 had a global box office of $225 million.
