Will audiences get tired of superhero movies? Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige disagrees. In a recent podcast interview, he said that Marvel comics have 80 years of "groundbreaking" stories that can be adapted into "different genres." Feige made the comments during an appearance on the "Movie Business Podcast," hosted by writer and USC School of Cinematic Arts professor Jason Squire. Kevin Feige said: "I've been at Marvel Studios for 22 years, and most people at Marvel Studios have been there for 10 years or more. Probably since my second year at Marvel, people have been asking, 'Well, how long will this last? Is the comic book movie boom going to end?'" Feige continued: "I don't really understand the question because to me it's like watching Gone with the Wind and saying, 'How many movies can be made from a novel? Will people be disgusted by a movie based on a book?' You never ask that question. A book can be anything. This is almost an attempt. A novel can be any type of story. It all depends on how you adapt the story. People who don't read comics don't understand it. The same is true in comics." Feige mentioned Marvel's rich comic book catalog since 1939, and said that Marvel Studios has countless different types of stories that can be adapted. "Marvel Comics has been telling the most interesting, moving and groundbreaking stories for 80 years, and we're honored to be able to adapt them with what we have," he said. "Another way to do it is to adapt them into different genres and the types of movies we want to make. Feige concluded: "If we tell the story right and do it in a way that audiences don't get tired of it years later, we can make any kind of movie. They just have to have two things in common: the Marvel Studios logo above the title and a good idea from our publishing history." |
