John Woo: I don't watch superhero movies, I prefer old-fashioned, real movies

Recently, Chinese director John Woo was interviewed in the United States while promoting his new film "Midnight Pursuit" and said that he does not watch superhero movies, but instead chooses "real" movies shot by Martin Scorsese and others, but there are very few such movies nowadays.

"I've never been a fan of movies with big special effects, or anything based on comic books. I prefer Martin Scorsese movies, that kind of thing, can't wait to see Killers of the Flower Moon. I like old-fashioned movies, real movies, and there aren't many of them these days."

John Woo said that his original work "A Better Tomorrow" was a tribute to Martin Scorsese's "Mean Streets" and was deeply influenced by that work.

"Night Pursuit" is John Woo's second film as director after "The Hunt" in 2017, and also his first Hollywood film since "Memento Mobili" in 2003. John Woo said: "When I got the script for "Night Pursuit", I was very excited. There is no dialogue in the whole movie, and I can use my talent to tell a story intuitively."

Talking about his return to Hollywood, he said: "I've been looking for a good story, and it just happened to be a Hollywood movie. I never felt like I was back in Hollywood. For me, I never left Hollywood. I made several movies in China in the past 20 years, and returning to Hollywood is like returning home."

As for Woo's next project, he hopes to continue filming in Hollywood: "It's still hard to find funding for the kind of movies I want to make, like musicals or westerns. These movies are not so popular anymore. Maybe my next movie will be a western."
